Environment Issues: Browser Settings that affect Portal Access
If you suspect that environment issues may be causing a problem accessing the CWUG portal, try adjusting your browser’s privacy and security settings.
Try these steps one at a time and please let us know what worked (and what didn’t). The examples below use Internet Explorer (IE), but other browsers have similar configuration settings.
How are your privacy options set?
In order to use the CWUG portal, your browser must be able to accept cookies, which is controlled in the browser privacy settings.
To check and adjust your privacy settings in IE:
Go to the Internet Options dialog box (choose Tools > Internet Options) and click the Privacy tab.
In this dialog you can either:
a. Change your overall privacy level by moving the slider setting up and down, or
b. Manage privacy settings on a per-site basis by clicking the Edit button, entering the string *.cwug.net in the Per Site Privacy Actions dialog, and clicking Allow
Close all browser windows and try accessing the CWUG portal from scratch to see if changing this setting solves your problem.
What are your security settings?
In order to use the CWUG portal, your browser security settings must not disable certain features (you need to be able to run scripts, etc.).
To check and adjust your security settings in IE:
Go to the Internet Options dialog box (choose Tools > Internet Options) and click the Security tab.
Click the Trusted sites icon, then click the Sites button.
Type the string *.cwug.net in the "Add this Web Site to the zone" field. Click Add, and then click OK.
As seen on the Security tab with the Trusted sites icon selected, the "Default Level" security setting (Medium is default for Trusted sites) should be sufficient for viewing the CWUG portal.
Of course, if you want, you can set the security level for Trusted sites even lower or turn browser features on/off at a more granular level by clicking the Custom Level button.
Close all browser windows and try accessing the CWUG portal from scratch to see if changing this setting solves your problem.
We hope these suggestions solve any problem you have accessing the portal. If not, or to share successes, please contact the CWUG Portal Editor.
